The Theraplex line of moisturizers, first introduced by Medicis Pharmaceutical in 1990, provides a moisturizing, non-drug approach to the treatment of severe dry skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, ichthyosis and xerosis.

Most cosmetic moisturizers only provide short term relief of persistent dry skin, using various ingredients to provide the sensation of moisture. When applied to the skin, Theraplex immediately helps the skin's barrier to retain moisture and significantly reduces moisture loss for up to 8 hours.

The Theraplex brand has expanded to include five unique formulations each designed to meet different skin care needs. Each of the products contains the ESPF and hydrosilicone delivery system. Dermatologists have been using and recommending Theraplex products to their patients for over 20 years.

The Theraplex Story

Physicians have long recognized petrolatum as one of the most effective moisturizers and protective skin barriers available. However, the problem with petrolatum has always been its greasy, occlusive nature which makes it cosmetically undesirable as a treatment for patients with dry skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, ichthyosis, and xerosis (severe dry, itchy skin).

In 1990, a Swiss research scientist, Dr. H.R. Suess, developed and patented a process which eliminated over 80% of the greasy oils and all of the contaminants found in petrolatum. This resulted in an enriched special petrolatum fraction (ESPF) which retained all of the superior moisturization and protective properties of petrolatum without the greasiness, tackiness, and inability to penetrate the skin.

Dr. Suess joined with noted U.S. research scientist, Dr. Eugene Gans, to combine his ESPF with a novel hydrosilicone delivery system to create the Theraplex line of moisturizers. These moisturizers, with their hydrosilicone delivery system and ESPF, have the unique ability to penetrate deep into the cracks and fissures of the skin to provide moisture where it is needed most. This special delivery system helps Theraplex provide a virtually greaseless and durable micro-protection barrier which:

Seals the skin to stop excessive moisture loss;
Increases internal moisture and softness;
Increases the flexibility and suppleness of the skin;
Protects against physical and environmental irritants; and
Stimulates the formulation of essential lipids that surround and protect skin cells.
Almost as important as what is in Theraplex moisturizers is what is not in them. Designed for sensitive skin, they utilize simple formulas which do not contain added ingredients, such as preservatives, parabens, lanolin, fragrances, or gluten, that can irritate sensitive skin and compromise therapeutic treatments. Clinical studies have shown that Theraplex stops and prevents the vicious cycle of persistent dry skin by delivering moisture deep into the skin barrier and creating a protective barrier to lock in essential moisture and to prevent future moisture loss for hours. Given the superior moisturization, hypoallergenic nature, and clinical results of Theraplex products, dermatologists have been using and recommending them to their patients for over 20 years.
